Scalloped potatoes are one of those cozy, comforting dishes that make any meal feel like a celebration. Whether you’re hosting a family dinner, attending a holiday gathering, or just need something warm and satisfying, these creamy layers of thinly sliced potatoes smothered in a rich homemade sauce are exactly what your plate is missing.
In my humble opinion, this is the best scalloped potatoes recipe out there. It’s simple, flavorful, and absolutely indulgent — yet made with ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen.
Ingredients
This recipe serves 4–6 people as a side dish.
4 cups thinly sliced potatoes (Yukon Gold or Russet work best)
3 tablespoons butter
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1½ cups milk (whole milk preferred for richness)
1 teaspoon salt
½ cup sliced green onion (or chopped white onion for a bolder flavor)
Black pepper, to taste
Optional: ½ cup shredded cheese (cheddar, Gruyère, or mozzarella), paprika for topping
Instructions
1. Prep the Potatoes
Peel and thinly slice the potatoes into ⅛-inch rounds. You can use a mandoline slicer or a sharp knife. Uniform slices ensure even cooking and beautiful layers.
2. Make the Roux (Cream Sauce Base)
In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1–2 minutes, stirring constantly. This forms a roux that will thicken your sauce.
