Don’t Throw Them Away Anymore: How to Use Eggshells for Your Health and Your Plants

Eggshells are often discarded without a second thought, destined for the trash or compost bin. However, these humble kitchen scraps are far more valuable than they appear. Composed of 90% calcium carbonate, eggshells are a powerhouse of nutrients that can benefit both your health and your garden. By reusing them, you’re not only reducing waste but also embracing a natural, economical, and sustainable solution to improve your well-being and nurture your plants. Here’s how you can make the most of this overlooked resource.

Health Benefits
Eggshells are rich in calcium, an essential mineral that supports strong bones and teeth. In fact, the calcium found in eggshells is highly absorbable, making it just as effective as commercial supplements. Instead of discarding the shells, consider turning them into a natural calcium supplement with a few simple steps:

Prepare the Shells : After cracking open your eggs, rinse the shells thoroughly to remove any remaining egg white. Boil them for about 5 minutes to disinfect.

Dry and Grind : Allow the shells to dry completely—either by leaving them in the sun or baking them in the oven at a low temperature (around 200°F/95°C) for 10–15 minutes. Once dry, grind them into a fine powder using a coffee grinder or mortar and pestle.
Use as a Supplement : Add a small pinch of the powdered eggshell to smoothies, juices, soups, or other dishes. A teaspoon provides approximately 800–1,000 mg of calcium, which is close to the daily recommended intake for adults.
