Luckily, the kids and I haven’t had a chance to try the candies yet. But my husband ate one, and soon we had to go to the hospital.
We still can’t get over the idea that such a threat was hidden in a seemingly ordinary sweet. I share this story not to scare, but to warn: always pay attention to what you eat and be careful.
What we found was mercury .
Why is it dangerous?
Mercury is one of the most toxic heavy metals. Even small doses can cause poisoning: damage to the nervous system and brain; disruption of kidney and liver function; breathing and heart problems; general intoxication of the body.
Mercury is especially dangerous for children and pregnant women, as it can cause serious complications and even congenital pathologies.
How mercury could end up in food
There are several scenarios:
Manufacturing Violations – If the factory was applying old equipment with mercury lamps or devices, a leak could have happens
Storage violations – mercury may have entered the products during transportation or storage in a warehouse.
Intentional contamination – unfortunately, sometimes there are cases where someone deliberately adds hazardous substances.
